Founded in Norfolk, Virginia in 1934, the Golden Gate Quartet was the first group to combine Gospel Music with the harmonizing sound and rhythm of a Barbershop Quartet. There were no instruments to back their music in this early period of the group, but used vocals to mimic various instruments they wanted to incorporate.
These original four members, A.C.Griffin, Willie Johnson, Henry Owens, and Cliff Givens were the only members to use vocal techniques to mimic the sound of musical instruments.
